The annual Heavy Woollen Derby lived up to the hype as James Ford’s men secured local bragging rights with a clinical performance over the Dewsbury Rams.
The Bulldogs set the tone early. Robson Stevens proved a handful for the Rams’ line, eating up metres with powerful drives that consistently put the opposition on the back foot. Defensively, Wesley Bruines stood tall, neutralizing Dewsbury’s attacking threats with high-intensity efforts.
The deadlock was broken by debutant Jack Hudson, who marked his arrival by crossing the whitewash for the opening score. Josh Woods took on the kicking duties, calmly slotting the extras.
Batley doubled their advantage before the interval through a familiar source. Joe Burton, continuing his fine scoring form this season, darted over to extend the lead. Woods remained perfect with the boot, sending the Bulldogs into the sheds with a commanding 12 – 0 lead.
The second half was a much tighter affair, characterized by a war of attrition in the middle of the park. Robbie Butterworth’s decision-making under pressure proved vital as he neutralized a series of dangerous Rams kicks.
Just before the final hooter, Batley added the finishing touch. Burton showcased his pace once more, racing through to touch down to the right of the posts for his second of the afternoon. Woods maintained his 100% record, converting his third goal of the game to wrap up a 18 – 0 victory.
Looking Ahead:
It was a productive outing for Ford’s side, successfully shaking off the preseason cobwebs. The Bulldogs now turn their attention to the Sheffield Eagles on 11th January at the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium for their final friendly before the competitive season kicks off.
