END OF AN ERA AS BRETH CALLS TIME

Bulldogs icon Alex Bretherton will finally hang up his boots this weekend after a memorable career spanning 15 years, and  including both Heavy Woollen clubs.

After 6 years at neighbours Dewsbury Rams, Alex made the switch to The Bulldogs for the 2011 campgaign, the first of 9 seasons at The Fox’s Biscuits Stadium.

Consistent solid performances, coupled with crucial Tries and match winning goal line tackles, have made him a huge favourite on the terraces and with teammates alike.

Chairman Kevin Nichlas had managed to talk Alex into another season the last time he wanted to finish, 2 years ago! But accepts this time we need to leave him to make the decision “Breth is a complete professional. His attitude on and off the field is first class and he has to go down as one of the best signings made at this club.

“It will be strange not to have him with us on matchdays but hopefuly we’ll see plenty of him, along with Jenny, the kids an their families. They’ve become a big part of Batley Bulldogs”

In an emotional interview this week Alex told us “It’s a bit surreal. Not being around the lads will be massive but all good things come to an end.

“The over riding emotion is that I got to represent this club and play at this level.  Now it’s just time to be a Dad, I love this club amd it will always have a special place in my heart, but I have three young kids and they’ll take up my time now, time to support Jenny like she’s supported me”
